Permitted development & government policy: what you need to know
The policy landscape for onshore wind in the UK has shifted significantly in recent years, and the direction of travel is increasingly positive for turbine owners and prospective investors.
FiT Repowering: A Major Opportunity
Ofgem has confirmed that existing FiT holders can now repower to a larger, more efficient turbine without losing their FiT accreditation. This means owners of aging or underperforming turbines can dramatically increase generation - and revenue - while retaining the financial incentives already in place. Earthmill has already delivered several successful repowering projects under this framework.
Planning & Permitted Development
The government has signalled continued support for distributed wind as part of its clean energy targets. While permitted development rights for wind turbines remain limited in England, planning policy has become more favourable in recent years, with local authorities increasingly supportive of small-scale agricultural and commercial installations.
For repowering of existing sites, the planning process is often simplified, particularly where the replacement turbine does not significantly exceed the footprint or height of the original. Our specialist planning partners have extensive experience navigating this process across all four nations.
